The evolution of the gym has come to include real-world training for all forms of athletes. One of the ways this is accomplished is by training on life-like surfaces that best mimic where the athlete will be put to the test during live events – artificial turf. This includes everything from professional sports in stadiums to Ironman style extreme events. At the same time, artificial turf surfaces provide realism, shock absorption, and safety for all who train on it.

Indoor Gym Turf Types

When it comes to gyms and turf there are a handful of viable options that can handle that abuse and provide all of the attributes that gyms are seeking. Some companies have developed gym specific turf offerings, while at the same time offering stadium field turf as an equivalent option.

The beauty of field turf is that it has been the most studied and engineered of all of the options to mimic the real thing. Every professional sports organization from the NFL to the FIFA has been striving for the ultimate artificial turf surface solution for decades, and as a result, modern field turf has been designed to meet these strict standards.

For many local gyms, the type of turf used will come down to budget. However, when utilizing used field turf from these pro sports organizations, gyms will find a budget-friendly professionally engineered turf product that their members can reap the benefit of. These recovered turf products still have decades of life left in them and come in at cost far, far lower than that of new.

Installing Turf In A Gym

Installation of artificial turf inside of a gym will generally take place on a concrete surface. The process is pretty straight forward, but everything must start on a clean, dry, and level surface. Depending on the size and shape of your turf roll and the size and shape of the space to be covered, pre-planning your cuts and how the pieces will lay is key.

This can be done by pre-measuring, adding chalk lines, and then dry fitting the pieces prior to final adhesion. From here, you start the adhesion process to the floor, as well as along any seam (utilizing seam tape). This should then be rolled will a 75lb+ roller and allowed to dry for 72 hours.

What Kind Of Training Takes Place On Gym Turf?

Gym’s that utilize artificial turf are generally looking for realistic training on a safe surface. While rubber floor mats will be used throughout most of the gym, an artificial field turf area will provide elevated training options. Some of these training styles are:

  • Plyometrics
  • Battle Rope
  • Weight Training
  • Sled Drags
  • Tire Flips
  • Medicine Ball
  • Box Jumps
  • Aerobics
  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Cross-Fit
  • HITT

The reality is, each gym can develop their own plan for nearly any kind of training on this hard-working, safe, and low maintenance surface while providing both realism and professionalism for their members.
