In autumn, the temperature starts to drop—and so do the leaves.

Sure, it’s nice at first, but after that feeling wears off, those autumn leaves can become a bit of a hassle for any property owner.

If you have an artificial turf lawn, you have a lot less maintenance to worry about than those with natural grass. However, there are still a few things you should do to make sure your synthetic turf stays in top shape through the fall season.

Don’t Forget to “Water” Your Lawn

While an artificial turf lawn doesn’t need to be watered in the traditional sense, it’s still recommended to give it a quick rinse every so often just to keep it clean, green, and healthy. Your garden hose is all you need; simply turn it on to a low setting and let the water run over the turf until you’re satisfied.

Leaves, twigs, and other debris can build up on turf over time—especially in the fall—so be sure you’re rinsing/sweeping this debris away. While you don’t have to worry about fungal infections or pest infestations with artificial turf like you do with a regular grass lawn, a build-up of leaves and other organic debris can create conditions that are conducive to these problems. Fortunately, all it takes to prevent buildup of leaf and twig debris is some regular rinsing/cleaning.

Brushing/Raking Leaves

Fall leaves can be pretty, but they can also be a pain—especially when they start to pile up in your yard. Artificial grass is designed to look great year round—while they can be pretty at first, it’s a shame to let all those dead leaves cover it up and ruin its pristine appearance.

Fortunately, it’s easy to keep your turf looking great throughout the fall season; all you need to do is give it a good brush every now and then. A turf brush will do the trick; just make sure you’re not using a stiff/metal brush, as this may damage the turf. If you’re not sure what kind of brush to use, ask an artificial turf installation professional.

If you don’t have a turf brush or don’t want to buy one, no worries—a regular broom can work just fine. Just be sure to sweep softly enough to avoid causing damage—remember that if you have any debris left over from sweeping, you can always give it a quick rinse with the hose to finish the job.

This may be all you need to do to keep your turf looking great this fall, but if you notice any areas that seem to be collecting more leaves than usual, you can also clean leaves off your turf with a plastic/nylon rake (don’t use a rake with metal tines) or a leaf blower to remove leaves and other debris. You may also want to use the hose to rinse off the turf if it is particularly dirty after the leaves have been cleared.

New & Used Artificial Turf

All investments need to be protected, and a beautiful, long-lasting artificial turf lawn is no different. Fortunately, taking care of it in the fall is as easy as taking care of it in Spring, Summer, and Winter; just remember to give it a good rinse/brush every now and then, and you’ll be sure to enjoy a beautiful, green lawn all autumn long.

While your neighbors are busy mowing, dethatching, spreading granules and fertilizer, and worrying about their grass dying in the cold weather after they’ve paid to have their sprinkler system winterized, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your low-maintenance artificial turf lawn—knowing that your lawn will look great through the fall and winter!
