An exuberant ground breaking ceremony for a new artificial turf sports field at Power Cross Ministries just took place—and many boys in the Statesville and Salisbury, NC area finally have a place to play football.

The field was expertly installed by UDC Sports—specialists in sports facility Design-Build construction and equipment and surfacing installations—using artificial turf and infill supplied by ReTURF.

During the ribbon cutting ceremony at Power Cross, dozens of boys raced onto their brand new, first class, all weather artificial turf football field.

A place to practice, a place to play, a place to call their own.

As the Iredell Free News put it, the brand new artificial turf field is a “major milestone in the history of Power Cross and in the lives of the players.”

According to the newspaper, an all weather playing surface for the youth football team was something the founders of Power Cross Ministries had been dreaming of since 2007. Their ministries currently serve about 185 boys (and maintain a whopping 100 percent high school graduation rate). Many of the early participants of Power Cross have now graduated from college as well.

The players in the youth football program will now have a much needed space of their own to practice in, as well as a place to play home games—something they had been lacking, until now.

The completion of the new field lined up with Power Cross Ministries’ recent 15 year anniversary.

The 75,000 sq. ft artificial turf field was designed and completed by UDC Sports using Tempo Turf LS-42225 supplied by ReTURF. Construction of the field began with clearing of the project site in September of 2021, and the project was completed in early April 2022.

ReTURF also supplied the ReFill (reclaimed infill) utilized by UDC during the installation of the turf. The ReFill used in the project is a mixture of crumb rubber and sand.

UDC Sports installed the turf field complete with a center logo, sideline logos, end zone lettering, goal posts, and inlaid markings conforming to the to NFHS and NCHSAA standards.

They also handled the design and construction of a retaining wall, sidewalk, and other amenities at the site of the new field. To complete the access ramp, UDC used Tempo Turf LT-60125 artificial landscape turf.

In all, the installation included grading of over 20,000 cubic yards of soil at the project site.

“It gives them a sense of ownership,” said Power Cross Ministries’ Director of Operations, Cory Knight. “They see someone investing in them. This doesn’t happen everywhere.”

That investment in a new turf sports field is already paying off—the upgrade quickly led to 18 new boys signing up for the ministry over just the past few weeks.

Power Cross put it best: “God built an awesome football field. Last night, we were blessed to share His goodness with the young men of PC and our community. It was PURE JOY to see the young men of Power Cross run onto their football field for the first time!”
