I’ve seen this question a few times in passing, and there is an answer. What some see as “artificial grass sand” is actually referred to as infill. Infill is a crumb rubber, silica sand, or crumb synthetic sand-like material that is brushed into artificial turf. This occurs after the turf is installed, it’s one of the final steps.
The purpose of this sand-like infill is to help support the individual synthetic grass blades and helps with shock absorption underfoot. This equates to more of a natural-looking and more comfortable artificial turf product. At the same time, this layer of infill also acts as a weight, helping secure artificial turf to the ground during heavy winds.
